Women's Soccer Wins Conference Opener Over Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Alexa Maple and Aimee Kurfurst scored as the Westminster women's soccer team kicked off the RMAC season with a road win, 2-1, over Colorado Mesa.

Alexa Maple was assisted by Hannah Taie and Abby Keeley for the game's opening goal in the 28th minute. Mesa's (2-2-1, 0-1-0 RMAC) goalkeeper made three saves to deny Dominique Estrada, Rebecca Wheeler and Kurfurst from the increasing Westminster's lead. Fifty-one seconds before half, Mesa's Lila Dere equalized on a penalty kick.

Naomi Kehl had plenty to do in the second half after a quiet first half. Kehl kept the Mavericks from scoring with five saves. Westminster created one chance on goal out of six shots in the second half.

The Griffins (2-0-2, 1-0-0 RMAC) out shot the Mavericks 5-2 in overtime. The first period played to a scoreless draw with both teams recording a shot on goal. Ellie Echeverio assisted Kurfurst on the game winner (102nd minute) on the first shot of the second overtime period.
