GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—
Alexa Maple and
Aimee Kurfurst scored as the Westminster women's soccer team kicked off the RMAC season with a road win, 2-1, over Colorado Mesa.
Alexa Maple was assisted by
Hannah Taie and
Abby Keeley for the game's opening goal in the 28
th minute. Mesa's (2-2-1, 0-1-0 RMAC) goalkeeper made three saves to deny
Dominique Estrada,
Rebecca Wheeler and Kurfurst from the increasing Westminster's lead. Fifty-one seconds before half, Mesa's Lila Dere equalized on a penalty kick.
Naomi Kehl had plenty to do in the second half after a quiet first half. Kehl kept the Mavericks from scoring with five saves. Westminster created one chance on goal out of six shots in the second half.
The Griffins (2-0-2, 1-0-0 RMAC) out shot the Mavericks 5-2 in overtime. The first period played to a scoreless draw with both teams recording a shot on goal.
Ellie Echeverio assisted Kurfurst on the game winner (102
nd minute) on the first shot of the second overtime period.
Kurfurst led the Griffins with four shots and two on goal.
Sophia DiGeronimo,
Alexa Maple and
Brynnae Braun each had three shots with Braun and Maple recording one on goal.
Kehl faced a season high 17 shots and made a season high seven saves.
