GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Westminster men's soccer team began its season against Fort Lewis College. The Skyhawks (1-0-0, 0-0-0 RMAC) scored in the 89
th minute to defeat the Griffins (0-1-0. 0-0-0 RMAC).
Fort Lewis managed two more shots than Westminster, 8-6, but the Griffins were the aggressors offensively winning 10 corner kicks and suffering 19 fouls by the Skyhawks.
Both goalkeepers came up with a save to keep the game level at zero in the first half. Westminster's
Ian Rose was called into action early making a save in the top-right corner to deny Fort Lewis's Brantley Bice.
Gavin Flitton's 22
nd minute shot would have put the Griffins in the lead but Peter Byrne made the save for Fort Lewis.
The Griffins had two more chances in the second half.
Zach Nielsen had a chance turned away in the 58
th minute and
Armin Hasanovic was stopped in the 83
rd minute by Daniel Wilmore.
Rose stopped Loic Jean-Baptiste in the 89
th minute for his second save, and the game looked destined for overtime. Before the whistle sounded, Kanon Tebo scored to give Fort Lewis the win.
The Griffins take the pitch on Sunday, Mar. 21, in the conference opener against Colorado Mesa at 2:30 pm.
