SALT LAKE CITY—
Katie Jacox and
Audrey Green had nine kills and
Malinda Messner and
Avery Alger had seven kills in a five set match against #6 Colorado School of Mines. Mines managed to right the ship and win the final set 15-6.
The Griffins kept the score close halfway through the first two sets. The Griffins were within three points, 11-14, in the first set until a 9-3 run by the Orediggers. Westminster was leading, 12-10, in the second when the Orediggers got hot and finished the set with a 15-3 run.
Errors in the third and fourth set opened the door for the Griffins who took advantage to tie the match two sets a-piece. Mines had six errors in the third and five in the fourth to Westminster's two and three. Westminster was better in the attack hitting at a clip of .360 in the third and .250 in the fourth.
The Griffins earned a tough win in the third set after 12 ties and six lead changes. Trailing by two, 15-17, Westminster outscored Mines 10-5 to win the third set, 25-22.
Momentum goes a long way as the Griffins led for most of the fourth set. The Griffins took the lead at 8-7 and kept it the rest of the way for another 25-22 win.
Green and Jacox led the team with nine kills each. Green had a big return in the fourth set with seven kills and Jacox recorded four in the second set. Messner and Alger were second on the team with seven kills each.
Bri Mortensen led the team with 28 assists and was second on the team with 15 digs.
Katana Montford led the team with 16 digs.
