Griffins Defeat Grizzlies For First Conference Win

Westminster went 1-1 with a loss to Regis and win over Adams State

DENVER, Colo.—Westminster's women's volleyball went 1-1 in its pod against Regis and Adams State. The Griffins (3-5, 1-4 RMAC) bounced back to defeat Adams State (0-5, 0-4 RMAC) in five sets after beginning the day with a three-set loss to Regis (3-2, 3-1 RMAC).
 
Two reached 20 kills over the two matches. Lydia Miller led the weekend with 23 kills hitting at a clip of .213. Green recorded two aces, 15 digs and three block assists. Messner tallied 21 kills, one ace and six block assists.
 
Bri Mortensen recorded 64 assists with 20 digs, three kills, two aces and five blocks. Katana Montford recorded a team-high 28 digs.
 
Match #1 Westminster 0, Regis 3
Westminster had a tough go in the opening match against the #20 Rangers who cruised to a three-set win over the Griffins. The Griffins fell in three sets (12-25, 18-25, 17-25) with just 21 kills and a hitting percentage of .031.
 
Malinda Messner led the team with six kills followed closely by Audrey Green and Lydia Miller with five.
 
Bri Mortensen led the team with 16 assists and eight digs. Katana Montford and Holland Vande Merwe were second on the team with six digs each.
 
Match #2 Westminster 3, Adams State 2
Westminster won its first RMAC contests of the season, winning the first, third and fifth sets (25-23, 25-16, 15-6) to defeat Adams State.
 
Adams State led to begin the first set until a 10-3 run put the Griffins ahead, 15-10. The Grizzlies clawed their way back and tied the game at 22. Westminster finished the set with a 3-1 run to seal the win.
 
 
Green recorded five kills in a 14-4 run that gave the Griffins an eight-point lead, 16-8, in the third set. Westminster held the Grizzlies to just eight points the rest of the set.
 
Westminster jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set and only allowed the Grizzlies one point at a time. Westminster had 10 kills and zero errors hitting at a clip of .625 for the win.
 
Green, Messner and Miller repeated as the top attackers with more than 10 kills. Green led the team with a season high 18 kills and had a season high in digs (12), assists (3) and blocks (3). Messner also reached a season high with 15 kills and recorded four blocks. Miller recorded 13 kills and had six digs.
 
Mortensen recorded a season-high 48 assists and a season-high four blocks. Montford led the team with a career high 22 digs.
