Carlsen Leads Griffins In Upset Of #17 Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo.—Kaylee Carlsen scored a season high 16 points to lead the Griffins over the #17 Colorado School of Mines.
 
Westminster shot 44.9% from the field and made 8-18 from three and 15-16 from the free throw line. The Orediggers had 20 more attempts, shooting 34.8% from the field, 4-16 from three and 10-11 from the line.
 
 
The Griffins started a little slow and fell behind, 6-15, in the first quarter. A 7-4 run to finish the quarter cut the Oredigger lead to six.
 
The Griffins made an 18-4 run to finish the second quarter with an eight-point lead. The Griffins went 6-8 from the field, 2-3 from three and 4-4 from the strip. Lyndzi Rich scored six, Abby Mangum and Carlsen both scored five and Martín scored two in the run.
 
Westminster stretched its lead and finished the third quarter with its largest lead of the game, 55-49.
 
Mines started the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run to cut Westminster's lead down to three with five minutes left to play. Sarah McGinley and Carlsen scored to end the run and give the Griffins a little breathing room.
 
Carlsen finished the game 4-4 from the stripe to keep the Griffins ahead as the Orediggers came within one with 15 seconds left in the game.
 
Carlsen scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half. She shot 4-7 from the field, 1-3 from three and was perfect on seven attempts at the free throw line. Carlsen had a team high four steals and four assists.
 
McGinley, Martín and Ashley Greenwood rounded out the double-figure scorers. MGinley scored 14 points and Greenwood and Martín both had 10.
 
Martín led the team with 11 rebounds to grab her first double-double of the season.
 
Just two Orediggers reached double-figures. Courtney Stanton led the night with 19 points and Raven Herrara scored 11.
 
The Griffins finish the weekend at Regis. They will finish the conference season at home against Fort Lewis (Feb. 26) and Western Colorado (Feb. 27).
