Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Griffins Cruise Past Black Hills State, 85-49

Westminster women's basketball won its fourth straight game in an 85-49 win over Black Hills State on Saturday night.

SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster women's basketball (5-3, 4-0 RMAC) had four starters and five total players hit double digits in scoring and the Griffins held Black Hills State (4-6, 2-2 RMAC) to just 25 percent shooting for the game in an 85-49 win on Saturday night at the Behnken Field House.

Abby Mangum was active on both of ends of the court again and led the Griffins in plus/minus at +16 after the first half.  Mangum went 5-of-7 from the field in the first two quarters and finished the game with 14 points, her fifth double-digit scoring effort this season

Playing against her former team, Lyndzi Rich went 2-of-3 from the field in the opening half and 5-of-7 in the second to finish with 15 points on the night. Sarah McGinley (15), Rae Falatea (12) also reached double digits in points while Ashley Greenwood went 7-of-10 from the field to lead the Griffins with 16 points while also adding seven assists.

Westminster started the game with hot shooting, posting its most efficient quarter offensively this season on 8-of-10 shooting as a team in the opening quarter.  Conversely, the Griffins held Black Hills State to just 3-of-13 (23 percent) shooting in the first to carve out a double-digit lead after the first ten minutes.  Both teams finished the opening half even at 14 rebounds apiece but Black Hills State pulled in nine offensive boards to hold an 11-3 advantage in second chance points at the break.

The Griffins took their largest lead of the first half , a 16-point advantage, into the break with the help of dominant post play as Westminster owned a 26-8 lead in points in the paint.  Westminster had been outscored 112-99 by opponents in the third quarter going into the game, but held the Yellow Jackets to just two field goals and 11 total points in the third period on Saturday night.  Westminster continued its efficient night on offense out of the break and grew its lead to 26 by the end of the quarter.

Westminster has now won back-to-back games against Black Hills State after dropping the first two matchups last season before an NCAA Tournament win over the Yellow Jackets in March.  The 36-point win was the largest all-time over Black Hills State and the biggest win for the Griffins since a 36-point blowout win over Chadron State back in January of 2019.

Westminster will be back at home next Thursday, Dec. 16, to take on CSU Pueblo beginning at 5 p.m.
