Griffins Start Slow in Three-Set Loss at 11th-Ranked Colorado School Of Mines

Westminster fell in straight sets on the road at No. 11 Colorado School of Mines on Friday.

GOLDEN, Colo. - Westminster volleyball (5-20, 3-12 RMAC) led just once in three sets as Colorado School of Mines (20-3, 13-2 RMAC) cruised to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-18) win on Friday night at the Lockridge Arena.

Westminster saw its best set on both sides of the net, but were unable to match the offensive firepower from the Orediggers.  Colorado School of Mines came into the match with the highest hitting percentage as a team in the RMAC and outdid its season average, finishing at .372 as a group for the night.

The potent Orediggers' attack came out strong and took a 10-2 before Westminster was finally able to win a point off its own offense.  Westminster was unable to string back-to-back points together as Colorado School of Mines held serve for long stretches en route to a 25-10 opening set win.

The second set was reminiscent of the first as the Orediggers again built a dominant early lead with a 16-4 run to start.  Colorado School of Mines finished at .379 hitting as a team for a second-straight set to begin the match and went ahead by two sets with a quick 25-13 second-set win.

The Griffins found some offensive success of their own in the third and took advantage of a small handful of Orediggers' miscues, but Colorado School of Mines was still able to hit .361 as a team with a match-high 18 kills as a team to finish the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third.

Bri Mortensen finished with 10 assists and a team-high eight digs as no Westminster player reached double digit digs for just third time this season.

Westminster will continue traveling as it gets set to play at Chadron State tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4 p.m.
