Katie Jacox added her own double double with 14 kills and 18 digs as Westminster volleyball was unable to finish off Chadron State in a 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 30-28, 25-23, 15-13) loss on Saturday at the Chicoine Center.
Kenzy Christensen had a season-high 10 blocks as the Griffins had a 13-5 advantage in blocks and
Bri Mortensen had a season-best 53 assists to go along with 13 digs and a pair of aces serving.
In a match that lasted nearly three full hours after the four o'clock first serve, Westminster looked like they'd made quick work of the Chadron State Eagles after winning a close first two sets 26-24 and 25-22, respectively.
The Eagles saw the first set point in the third, ahead 24-23, when two huge swings from
Olivia Curtis put Westminster ahead 25-24 and swung the pressure across the net as the Griffins earned a match point opportunity. Chadron went on to win the next two points and the two teams extended the set another seven rallies as the Eagles pulled one set closer with a 30-28 win.
Chadron State began the fourth with a 9-3 run as the Griffins played from behind to begin the set. A 5-1 Westminster run gave the Griffins a two-point lead at 21-19 before Chadron State stole the momentum again with its own 5-1 run to earn set point up 24-22. Fujiyama Aiyana would later send the match to a fifth set with the final point of the set as the Eagles took the fourth 25-23.
Westminster hit just .141 as a team for the match, but hit .500 in the fiftth as both teams came out with a sense of urgency in the deciding fifth set. The Griffins had all momentum with a 5-2 run to go ahead 11-10 but the Eagles were able to respond with a 4-0 run and held onto their late lead to complete the comeback with a 15-13 fifth set.
The Griffins will play their final road match of the season on Tuesday as they travel to Grand Junction, Colo., to face Colorado Mesa beginning at 7 p.m. Westminster will then return home host its regular-season finale on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m.
