Sluggish Third Quarter Dooms Griffins in Road Loss at NNU

Westminster scored just three points in a stagnant third quarter on offense and eventually fell, 61-61, on Saturday night.

NAMPA, Idaho - Sarah McGinley led Westminster women's basketball (1-1) in scoring with 16 points while Ashley Greenwood added 15 coming off of a 20-pooint outing in last night's season opener, but the Griffins were held to just two points in the third quarter and were unable to close the gap in the fourth quarter of a 61-54 loss at Northwest Nazarene (2-2) on Saturday night.

Greenwood, McGinley and Abby Mangum each finished with three assists on the night while Greenwood pulled in a team-high seven reboounds including two on the offensive glass.  Lyndzi Rich finished with six boards off the bench and had three offensive rebounds but the Griffins finished with just nine second-chance points.

After a first half that saw seven ties and four lead changes, Westminster and NNU went into the halftime break deadlocked at 33-33.

Westminster went 12-of-28 shooting as a team in the first half and 4-of-11 from three-point range.  The Griffins trailed by seven with just over two minutes to play in the first but scored the final three field goals to close the gap before the break.

The game turned in the third when Westminster suffered from its biggest scoring drought of the season and were held scoreless until a Greenwood jumper with just 37 seconds to play in the period.

The Griffins suffered from nine turnovers in the period and went just 1-of-11 shooting but remained in the game after holding NNU to just 11 points on 4-of-15 (27 percent) in the third.

Westminster's offense woke up in the fourth as the Griffins went 8-of-14 shooting with a pair of made three-point attempts but were unable to get back within one possession down the stretch as the Nighthawks hit a trio of free throws along with a forced turnover and a defensive stop to keep their distance in the game's final minute.

The Griffins will be back on the road in Ellensburg, Wash., for more non-conference action next week as they take on Central Washington on Fri., Nov. 26, at 5 p.m.  The Griffins will then play Seattle Pacific University on Sat., Nov. 27, at 3 p.m.
