SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Yusuf Mohamed scored a team-high 17 points and had 11 rebounds that included five on the offensive end but Westminster men's basketball (1-3) lost, 78-74, on Saturday afternoon at Lake Superior State (2-0), its second loss in as many days at LSSU.
Jarrett Jordan added 16 points off of the bench and went 2-of-3 from behind the arc as Westminster shot 8-of-20 (40 percent) from long range as a team.Â
Reme Torbert led the Westminster backcourt with six rebounds as the Griffins out-rebounded Lake Superior State 36-32 on the afternoon, their fourth-straight game to start the year with the edge on the glass. Torbert added eight points while
Taylor Miller had nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep to contribute to Westminster's 38-17 advanrtage in bench points.Â
After suffering from double digit turnovers as a unit through its first three games, Westminster cut its turnover total to just eight on Saturday afternoon but could not keep up with an LSSU offense that knocked down nine three's and 28 field goals as a team.
The Griffins trailed by as many as 11 during the second half but worked their way back to within one at, 71-70, after a
Ryan Bell layup with 3:05 to play. Lake Superior State scored the next four points on a pair of layups as the Griffins missed a pair of jumpers on the opposite end to take the game down to the final minute.
Jordan knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a one possession game at 75-72 with 45 seconds to play, but Westminster was unable to secure a defensive rebound after a stop on the ensuing possession and LSSUÂ hit a trio of free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Westminster will return to Salt Lake City as it preps for its home opener next weekend on Fri., Nov. 26, beginning at 7 p.m., against Central Washington. The Griffins will then host Western Oregon in the Behnken Field House on Sat., Nov. 27, at 7 p.m.
