SALT LAKE CITY - Yusuf Mohamed scored a team-high 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 at the free throw line but Westminster men's basketball (1-4) couldn't overcome eight made three's from Central Washington (2-1) on Friday night at the Behnken Field House.
Mohamed added five rebounds and a pair of blocks on the defensive end and
Matt Kitzman had a team-high seven out of the backcourt but the Griffins were outrebounded for the game for the first time all season.
After a first half that saw five lead changes, Westminster was unable to push back in front despite being within one possession on multiple trips down the timeline in the last ten minutes of the game.
Westminster's offense began to find its rhythm in the second half as it hit four three's in the half and finished with a 13-8 advantage in fast-break points for the game.
Mohamed cut the Wildcats' lead to just three with under three minutes to play but the Griffins had just one made field goal the rest of the way as Central Washington pulled away with a pair of jumpers and a pair of layups before icing the game at the free throw to push the final margin over double digits.
Westminster will be back on its home court tomorrow night as it takes on Western Oregon beginning at 7 p.m., back at the Behnken Field House.
