SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's soccer (9-9, 6-4 RMAC) conceded a goal just 40 seconds into the game as 17th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (14-3-1, 9-0-1 RMAC) won, 1-0, on Sunday at Dumke Field. The Griffins honored their nine graduating seniors (
Adir Hazout,
Skyler Kjellander,
Justus Kjellander,
Kaden Amano,
Zach Nielsen,
Gavin Flitton,
Ian Rose,
Colin Horman, and
Carlos Becerra-Gomez) before Sunday's match, the final regular-season home match for Westminster before hosting the RMAC Quarterfinal on Thursday night.
Westminster conceded its goal off of a throw in deep in its defensive third. Lucas King took the throw and sent a long ball that found the head of Vaughn Simpson. Simpson's header was perfectly placed and beat goalkeeper
Ian Rose in the upper right hand corner of the net.
The Griffins were not deterred by the early goal and eventually found room to work in the offensive third, especially in a second half that saw them outshoot Colorado School of Mines, 8-3.
Westminster finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on target for the match, but were unable to break through as Kenneth Symmes made four saves to earn the shutout win. Symmes directed six corner attempts away from his penalty area as Westminster continued to apply pressure in the offensive third through the full time whistle.
Westminster will head into the RMAC Tournament with wins in three of its last four as the Griffins get set to host its quarterfinal on Thursday night (game time to be announced).
