Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Griffins Fall 1-0 to Sixth-Seeded Regis

Westminster conceded the game's only goal late in the first half in a 1-0 loss to sixth-seeded Regis on Friday.

SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's soccer (9-10, 6-4 RMAC) conceded a 30th-minute goal and were unable to find the net despite attempting 19 shots in a 1-0 loss to Regis (10-7-1, 5-5 RMAC) on Friday night at Dumke Field in one of two RMAC Tournament quarterfinal matchups.

Westminster finished with a 12-2 advantage in second-half shots but were unable to break through despite a litany of dangerous attacks and a late keeper change.

Coming off of a tightly contested, 1-0 win for Westminster just two weeks earlier, the two teams had a nervy and uneventful first half hour in Thursday's quarterfinal match.

The lone goal of the game came on a quick counter attack from the Rangers as Parker Klein sent a ball into the top of the 18-yard-box that found Michael Jimenez.  Jimenez was then quick to fire on goal and put his shot into the top left corner of the goal out of the reach of goalkeeper Ian Rose, giving Regis the early one-goal advantage.

Westminster came out firing to begin the second half and out-shot Regis 4-0 in the first ten minutes of the second frame. Last week's RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week Tim Dolan performed in all of the big moments, however, and finished the game with four saves as he preserved the shutout late into the second half.

With just over ten minutes to play in the match, Dolan was forced to exit the match with a lower leg injury and was replaced by senior Cooper Erickson.  Erickson saw no warm up but was quickly thrown into action as Westminster applied heavy offensive pressure and forced multiple corners and free kicks deep in the Rangers' third.

Erickson was forced into two saves as the Griffins continued to throw their midfield and attacking players towards the Regis net but the Rangers held on to the one-goal lead through the full time whistle to secure their spot in Sunday's RMAC semifinal.

Westminster, which saw its roster depleted by injury in 2021, will turn its attention to 2022 as the quarterfinal exit likely closes the door to its hopes of qualifying for the NCAA South Central Region Tournament.

Despite a slow start in non-conference play and difficult early-season conference matchups, Westminster closed the regular season with three wins in their final four games and five of its last seven.
