Griffins Attack Stalls in Four-Set Loss

Westminster dropped its second road match of the weekend, 3-1, at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday.

COLORADO SPRINGS - Westminster volleyball (4-17, 2-10 RMAC) hit .389 and evened the match with a convincing 25-17 second-set win, but suffered from a combined 16 attack errors in the third and fourth as it lost to UC-Colorado Springs, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 25-10), on Saturday night at the Gallogly Events Center.

Katie Jacox (11), Lydia Parkinson (Miller) (11), and Maya Hamaoka (11) each had a team-high 11 kills while libero Alanna Lee had a team-leading 18 digs.  Jacox earned her first double-double of the season as she added a team-high 26 assists while setter Bri Mortensen dished out 15 assists in the match.

Westminster hit just .158 as a team in the opening set but were even with the Mountain Lions at 21-21 before UCCS won four of the next five points to go ahead in the match, 1-0.  The Griffins responded quickly though with a 9-3 run to begin the second set.  The Griffins gave up a 4-0 run cut their lead to just two early in the second set at 9-7, but Westminster would not surrender more than two-consecutive points the remainder of the frame and went on to win 25-17 to even the match.

Westminster led by as many as eight in the second set and tallied 18 kills as a team to go along with a match-high .389 attack percentage.

The Griffins carried the momentum into the third set but allowed a 7-2 run to relinquish their lead at 16-15.  UCCS would ride the momentum of that run to a 19-16 lead and later won five of six late points to give it set point at 24-19.  Lauryn Shockley would eventually finish off the third set, 25-21, for UCCS and the Mountain Lions went on to dominate the fourth, 25-10, to finish off the home win.

Westminster will have another quick turnaround for a mid-week nonconference matchup as it takes on Northwest Nazarene on Wednesday night beginning at 5 p.m.
