Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Griffins Spread the Wealth in Six-Goal Offensive Outburst

Westminster women's soccer had six different goal scorers in a 6-1 win at Western Colorado on Friday.

GUNNISON, Colo - Sami Black put Westminster women's soccer (RV) (5-2-3, 2-2-2 RMAC) ahead 1-0 in the fourth minute of the match and the Griffins put up six goals from six different field players as they took out Western Colorado (4-6-1, 1-4-1 RMAC), 6-1, on Friday night at Katy O. Rady Field.

The Griffins had their attack applying pressure from the opening whistle and in the fourth minute, winger Rebecca Wheeler had two quick shots on target denied with the second going behind the Mountaineer goal for a Westminster corner.  Alexa Maple took the corner and sent a ball to the near post, which Sami Black directed into the bottom right corner of the Western net to put the Griffins ahead, 1-0.

Westminster held onto the one-goal advantage into the 23rd minute when Aimee Kurfurst powered a strike from the right edge of the 18-yard-box over the head of goalkeeper Kaeyla Noble to put the Griffins ahead, 2-0.

Just six minutes after Kurfurt's strike, Brynnae Braun followed up an initial blocked shot attempt from the edge of the penalty area with a perfectly placed shot into the right side netting of the Mountaineers' goal to increase the Westminster lead to 3-0.  Westminster thought it had bagged its fourth goal in 30th minute on a headed effort off of a corner, but the goal was disallowed due to an offsides call.

Madison Schmidt would still pile one more goal onto the Griffins' lead before intermission, however, taking a long attempt from over 30 yards out that ended up hitting the crossbar and dropping over the goal line to make the Westminster lead 4-0.

The Griffins went into halftime with the four-goal advantage and added two more in the second half.  Rebecca Wheeler (53') and Sage Stott (72') each grabbed their first goals of the season as Westminster finished off a 6-1 with a late consolation goal from the Mountaineers in the 85th minute.

Goalkeeper Kelsea Cracroft had the second half off after a shutout performance in the first 45 and Naomi Kehl made a pair of saves in her first game action since Sept. 11 vs. Northwest Nazarene.

Westminster will finish its weekend road trip on Sunday when it faces Fort Lewis in Durango, Colo., beginning at 12 p.m.
