SALT LAKE CITY—The Griffins' second half lead slipped away as the men's basketball team fell, 74-80, to the Regis Rangers.
Efficient shooting, 66.67% from the field, saw Westminster leading by one, 39-38, at the end of the first half after eight lead changes and two ties. The Rangers kept the game close making 7-16 from three.
The Griffins started the second half with a hot hand making 5-7 from three for a 17-7 run and an 11-point lead.
Westminster's shooting cooled for the final eight minutes and Regis went on a 25-8 run to win the game.
Westminster outscored the Rangers 36-18 in the paint and out rebounded the visitors 35-12. Fouls and turnovers hurt the Griffins as the Rangers capitalized with 29 points off of 18 turnovers.
Isaiah Banks and
Joey Andrews led the team in scoring and rebounding. Banks scored a team high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Andrews scored 16 and led the team with seven rebounds.
The Griffins have four road games over the next two weeks—Western Colorado and Fort Lewis this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29 and 30, Colorado Mesa on Tuesday (Feb.2) and finishing at South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday (Feb. 6).
