MBB Falls By One To MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo.—Westminster's win streak stopped at three by MSU Denver. The men's basketball team (5-3, 5-3 RMAC) fell to the Roadrunners, 70-71.
 
The Griffins fell behind early, 6-0 in the opening two minutes. They took the lead a few minutes later, 11-10, and led for most of the game.
 
They shot 16-28 from the field, made 7-13 from three and were 5-5 from the stripe in the first half and finished the first half leading by five, 44-39
 
The Griffins suffered a bit of a second half shooting slump, shooting just 33.3% from the field and making 4-11 from the three.
 
A pair of Roadrunner threes tied the game, 62-62, with three minutes remaining. Matt Kitzman's three put Westminster in front only to be answered with a matching three by Keyshaad Dixon.
 
Reme Torbert restored Westminster's lead with a three off a screen. Dixon scored a pair of free throws to stay within one.
 
Isaiah Banks drove for a layup putting the Griffins ahead by three, then Tyrei Randall's jumper made it a one-point game, 70-69, with less than a minute remaining.
 
A turnover with 35 seconds left gave possession to the MSU Denver and shooting foul sent Dixon to the line on the next possession. Dixon missed the first then the second free throw, but Mavrick Gildyard came up with the offensive rebound and the basket for the lead, 72-71.
 
A missed layup and a blocked shot off the offensive rebound were Westminster's final chance as the final buzzer sounded.
 
Westminster shot 45.5% from the field, 45.8% from three and 90.0% from the stripe.
 
Kitzman shot 55.6% (5-9) from the field, 4-6 from three and 3-3 from the stripe to lead the Griffins with 17 points. He grabbed four rebounds and had two assists.
 
Banks scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and led the team with three assists.
 
Brandon Willardson led the team with five rebounds and had six points and one assist.
