GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—
Sarah McGinley and
Mariah Martin combined for 35 points as the Griffins nearly upset the #21 Colorado Mesa on their home court at Brownson Arena Friday night.
The Griffins fell behind by 11 points after a slow first quarter. They outscored the Mavericks 15-5 in the second quarter with an 11-point run to finish the half down by just one, 26-27.
Westminster made a final push with a little over one-minute left in the game. Mesa's Daniella Turner went 1-4 from the stripe allowing the Griffins to cut the lead to three, 47-50, on a pair of free throws by Martin and a deep three from McGinley.
Martin and McGinley led all scorers. Martin went 7-17 from the field and 4-4 from the stripe for 18 points. McGinley made 4-9 from beyond the arc and 1-1 from the stripe for 17. Martin, McGinley and Toluono led the team with seven rebounds each.
The Griffins play Western Colorado Saturday night at 5 pm in Gunnison, Colo., at Paul Right Gym. The game will be streamed live on the RMAC Network.
