WINGATE, N.C.—
Merritt McMahon shows offensive ability in Westminster men's lacrosse loss, 19-13, to #13 Wingate University Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.
McMahon scored the opening goal to give the Griffins their only lead of the game. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run that extended into the second period for a commanding lead. The Griffins scored three goals in the second period and entered halftime down, 14-4.
It was a tale of two halves for Wingate's goalies who made 8 saves against 12 shots in the first half but only managed three against 12 in the second.
The Griffins clawed their way back into the game but were unable to overcome the first half defecit. Westminster outscored the Bulldogs 4-3 in the third period and 5-2 in the fourth.
McMahon led the Griffins with five goals, completing his first hat-trick of the year in the third period. He took 12 shots with eight on goal and grabbed one ground ball.
Blake Gross and
Jake Auger both scored a pair of goals.

Jacob Taylor,
Andrew Thomas and
Easton Albert each netted once.
Goalie
Jordan Penn came in a couple of minutes before halftime. Penn faced 23 shots, made six saves and only allowed five goals.
The Griffins are home for two games this weekend with a home and conference opener against Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday and Adams State University on Sunday.
