SPEARFISH, S.D.--The Westminster women's basketball team got their season underway against Black Hills State. The Griffins had three games postponed, over the previous week, due to COVID-19 testing and protocols.
Turnovers and missed free throws allowed the Yellow Jackets to keep the game close as the Griffins came up three points short in tonight's loss, 68-71.
"All credit to Black Hills State and Coach Nore," Head Coach
Shelley Jarrard said. "They went small and got too many good looks from three."
"Too many turnovers to scores"
The Griffins shot 56.5% from the field and 57.1 from three, making 8-14. They outscored the home side 30-14 in the paint and out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 38-30. The Griffins committed 20 turnovers and were 8-15 from the stripe.
Black Hills shot 36.2% from the field but were 45.9% from the three, making 17-37. They were 80% from the stripe but only made five trips. The Yellow Jackets scored 29 points off turnovers and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds.
Sarah McGinley,
Lyndzi Rich,
Hunter Krebs and
Kaylee Carlsen all scored in double-digits. McGinley led the Griffins was 5-9 from beyond the arc to lead the Griffins in scoring with 23.
Rich, a transfer from Black Hills State in 2019, made her debut scoring 17 points shooting 58.3% from the field. Krebs was 5-5 from the field with 12 points and Carlsen was 3-4 with two threes for 10 points.
"Happy for Lyndzi to get her first game with us and playy as well as she did off the bench," Jarrard said.
McGinley led the team in rebounding and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. Krebs and
Mariah Martin grabbed eight and Carlsen grabbed six.
