Westminster Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short Against Western

SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally, Westminster women's basketball fell to Western Colorado 45-44 on Friday night at Behnken Field House.

The Griffins scored half of their 44 points in the final period, outscoring the Mountaineers 22-10. Mariah Martin scored 13 of her 15 points in the fourth to lead the charge. Western hit 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch, just enough to hold on for the victory.

Martin added five rebounds and three steals to her 15 points. Hunter Krebs finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Gabie Doud led Western and all scorers with 20 points, hitting 9 of 10 attempts from the free throw line. No other Mountaineer had more than six points.

Westminster led 10-9 after a low-scoring first quarter, then scored the first six points of the second quarter to stretch the lead to 16-9. The Mountaineers finished responded with a 16-2 run to take a 25-18 advantage into the break.

That Griffins deficit grew to 13 at the end of the third quarter, as Westminster scored just four points in the period.

Westminster hosts Colorado Mesa tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed live on the RMAC Network.
