SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster women's basketball ended Colorado Mesa's 14-game winning streak, as the Griffins outscored the Mavericks 21-7 in the fourth quarter to hand them their first loss in conference play.
Entering the fourth quarter trailing by 10, the Griffins opened the period with a 9-2 run to climb to within three. A pair of free throws by
Sarah McGinley gave Westminster the lead at 50-49 with just over one minute to play.
Between
Mariah Martin and McGinley, the Griffins went 5 of 6 from the line over the final 30 seconds to preserve the comeback victory.
Martin led all scorers with 18 points. She made all six of her free throw attempts and was 2 for 3 from behind the 3-point line.
Hunter Krebs added 15 points, and McGinley finished with 11 points and was 7 for 8 from the free throw line.
Kaitlin Toluono grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
With the victory, the Griffins (16-3, 11-2 RMAC) are one game behind the Mavericks (16-3, 12-2) for first place in the RMAC.
Westminster will face Adams State and Fort Lewis College on the road next weekend. Both games will be broadcast live on the
RMAC Network.
