ST. GEORGE, Utah—A last minute equalizer gave Westminster men's soccer hope, but for the second time this weekend the Griffins fall in overtime.
A defensive battle through the first half ended in a scoreless draw. A total of five shots, three by New Mexico Eastern and two by Westminster. Goalkeepers from both teams made two saves to preserve a first half shutout.
The game headed to overtime after both teams scored in the second half. A bit of fortune in the 58th minutes saw a Westminster own goal give the lead to the Greyhounds. The Griffins had several chances but couldn't beat ENMU's goalkeeper until the final minute of regulation.
The Griffins earned a corner kick and freshman
Ted Scott fired a shot off from the service but was saved by the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to junior
Bridger Hansen who scored from point-blank to make it 1-1.
Overtime proved unkind to the Griffins, for a second straight game, as ENMU scored in the sixth minute to win the game, 2-1.
"We played a better game today but did it to ourselves in the end," Head Coach
Josh Pittman said. "The guys battled until the end and were able to equalize after an unfortunate mistake put us behind. A missed mark on the final corner kick gave them the win."
The Griffins open conference at Dixie State on Friday, 9/20, and return home to play Colorado Christian on Sunday, 9/22.
