ST. GEORGE, Utah—Westminster's men's soccer team came back twice to tie the game and force overtime against Texas A&M International (TAMIU). A 98th minute goal for the Dustdevils ended the game as the Griffins suffered their first loss of the season, 3-2, in overtime.
TAMIU was the aggressor out shooting Westminster 15-5 and fouling the Griffins 23 times, nearly doubling Westminster's foul count. Both teams were efficient with there chances placing 60 percent on goal.
Red-shirt sophomore
Will Desantis and the defense was tested facing 15 shots, 10 on goal. Desantis made seven saves to deny the Dustdevils for much of the game.
Freshman
Marc Castillo registered the Griffins' first shot but his effort went wide. Junior
Bridger Hansen finished a free kick, sent in by junior
Kaden Amano, several minutes later to tie the score 1-1.
Senior
Danny Darelli's 78th minute goal tied the game a second time, 2-2, after having fallen behind in the seventh minut of the second half. Freshman Max bingman recorded the assist as he centered a pass to Darelli whose shot slid under the crossbar to beat the Dustdevils' goalkeeper.
TAMIU scored the game winner on a rebound in the eighth minute after the initial attempt was saved by Desantis.
Hansen scored his first goal of the season and Bingman recorded his first assist while Darelli and Amano each recorded their second goal and assist respectively.
The Griffins finish the weekend against Eastern New Mexico on Sunday at 11 am.
