PUEBLO, Colo.--Westminster women's lacrosse defense came up big to secure a road win over Colorado State University-Pueblo, 14-9.

"The defense held their ground and was able to run the possession clock out on Pueblo a few times," Head Coach Niki Harding said.  "The defense had great positioning which helped Mikala make 17 saves."

The Griffins finished the first half strong after falling behind, 3-1.  In the final five minutes of the first half, Westminster outscored the home team 3-1 with goals from senior Katie Hendershott, freshman Lauren Shoughro and junior Phebe Walker.  The half finished tied, 4-4, after the Thunderwolves scored in the final seconds.

Westminster made a 6-1 run and took a five-point lead, 10-5, with 19 minutes left in the half.  Senior Mikala Davis made 11 saves with seven saves coming in the final 19 minutes as the Thunderwolves increased their efforts to comeback.

The Griffins increased their lead to six, 13-7, with four and a half minutes left.  The Thunderwolves scored twice in the final minutes as the game came to an end, 13-9.

Davis faced 26 shots on goal, including 12 free position shots.  Davis saved made 17 saves, with 11 saves coming in the second half and seven saves on free-position attempts.

Shoughro led the Griffins with nine shots, six on goal, scoring five goals.  Hendershott and senior Madie Ingman each recorded four points with a pair of goals and pair of assists.

Sophomore Emmaline Russell led Westminster with three caused turnovers.  Junior Audree Erekson, freshman Nicole Fraser and freshman Katie Thielen each caused two turnovers.

Westminster returns home to face Colorado Mesa on Friday (4/20) and Regis on Sunday (4/22).
