Griffins Sweep Weekend Games In Alabama

Men's lacrosse are off to a good start to the season with two road wins and a 2-0 record.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Westminster's men's lacrosse team (2-0) took the field and began the 2019 season with a sweep over University of Montevallo and University of Alabama in Huntsville.
 
The Griffins faced off with University of Montevallo Falcons on Friday night.  The Griffins were two points ahead at the end of the first period.  They fell behind in the second period and trailed by one, 7-6, at the half.
 
Westminster was shutout by the Falcons in the fourth quarter but the four goals they scored in the third period was enough to regain the lead and record its first win of the season, 11-10.
 
On Sunday, the Griffins took early control of the game in the first period scoring four goals and shutting out University of Alabama in Huntsville.  They scored an additional four goals in the second period to go in at half with a six-point lead, 8-2.
 
Westminster's lone third period goal and three fourth period goals neutralized the home side's second half goals to finish the game with a six-point victory, 12-6. 
 
Kolton Atkinson ended the weekend with six goals and two assists and recorded a .882 shots-on-goal percentage (15-17) over the two games.  Atkinson led the Griffins with six points, five points and one assist, against Montevallo Friday.
 
Nick Marcy recorded three points in both games.  He scored one and assisted three on Friday and scored two goals in the win over Huntsville.
 
Mitchell Senour collected 15 ground balls and led the team in both games with 10 on Friday and five on Saturday.  He went 21-38 in faceoffs.
 
The Griffins host Lynn University (Mar. 5) and Rollins College (Mar. 10) for their next games.
