St. George—Westminster women's basketball open conference play with a win as
Mariah Martin leads the Griffins past her former team, 63-59.
"Always very happy to get a RMAC win on the road," Head Coach
Shelley Jarrard said.
The Griffins trailed by four points to begin the third quarter but outscored the home side 20-8 to take their first significant lead of the game. Westminster went 8-13 from the field and 4-6 from the charity stripe while Dixie State was 3-16 from the field, 1-5 from three and 1-2 from the stripe.
The final three minutes were a real nail biter as Dixie State tied the game, 56-56, and the lead changed four times.
Abby Mangum and
Sarah McGinley combined for three offensive rebounds in the final minute allowing the Griffins to take 44 seconds off the clock and a two-point lead.
Dixie State turned the ball over in its final possession and fouled Martin who sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
"We asked a lot of Mariah and she handled it very well," Jarrard said. "Abby's offensive boards at the end were huge."
Martin recorded her fourth game with 20 plus points. She led the game with 22 points and seven rebounds.
McGinley scored 15 points and led the team with eight rebounds.
Hunter Krebs scored 12 points with five rebounds before fouling out.
The Griffins host Black Hills State on Friday, Dec. 6, and South Dakota School of Mines on Thursday, Dec. 7.
