Comeback Falls Short Against Roadrunners

SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster men's soccer team scored two late second half goals but were unable to make the comeback against MSU Denver.

The Roadrunners scored twice in the first half and once in the third for a three-point lead. Jaime Gutierrez scored from a penalty kick in the 15th minute and Gianni Steijlen scored from the top of the penalty box for a 2-0 first half lead. Yannick Schad's 49th minute goal put the visitors up 3-0.

Westminster struggled to get through Metro's defense and recorded its first shot of the second half in the 78th minute. The Griffins finished with six shots and two goals.

The Griffins were awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute after Matt Penrod's shot was handled by a Metro defender. Gavin Flitton drove the penalty kick with confidence to the left side.

With a minute left, Adir Hazout drove down the right side and crossed to the back post. Kennedy Alder headed it back to the center of the goal box where Mor Cohen volleyed it past the goalkeeper at the near post.

Westminster finished with a couple of long throws into the penalty box but were unable to equalize before the final horn sounded.

The Griffins finished the regular season tied fifth with Fort Lewis and will travel to Dixie State for the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 8.
