Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eric Stephens

Griffins Defeat CCU 1-0

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Women's soccer shot a season high 30 shots in a 1-0 win over Colorado Christian University. Emma Heyn scored the game winner in the 81st minute.

"Good to get the three points," Head Coach Tony LeBlanc said. "It took us a while to get that goal but it was a great goal and well deserved."

The Griffins created plenty of chances out shooting the Cougars 30-4 and taking 10 corner kicks but were unable to capitalize until late in the game.

A corner kick in the eighth minute and a free kick in the 36th provided the best two chances of the first half. McKell Kellogg's 8th minute corner kick fell to Skye Jefferies at the penalty mark but she was unable to keep her shot down and the ball sailed over the crossbar. Goalkeeper Ireland VanDyke dropped a Kellogg freekick with nine minutes remaining in the half. Brynnae Braun got to the rebound but shot over the crossbar.

The Griffins saw several more attempts miss wide or go over the crossbar in the second half. Jayde Hansen and Braun each came close beating the keeper only to see their shots come off the crossbar. Finally in the 81st minute Westminster was rewarded for its efforts and persisstance.

Heyn scored a valuable goal for the Griffins for her first goal of the season. Brynnae Braun dribbled deep into the Cougar half and slipped to Heyn inside the right corner of the penalty box. Heyn contolled the ball with a touch then shot past VanDyke to the left post.

CCU had a clear chance to take the lead in the second half. Sophie Kern took control of an errant pass in Westminster's half and dribbled to the top of the penalty box. Hillary Weixler made a routine save as Kern's shot went straight down the middle to Weixler.

The Griffins travel to Fort Lewis on Friday and Adams State on Sunday.
