Women's Basketball Defeats Western

The RMAC's top two teams set for showdown Saturday night.

GUNNISON, Colo.—The Griffins shot 11-14 from the free-throw line to defeat the Western State Mountaineers, 77-64.  Westminster and Colorado Mesa are both unbeaten in conference and meet tomorrow night for a showdown in Grand Junction, Colo.

Denise Gonzalez scored a jumper and three-pointer for the games first points after nearly two scoreless minutes.  The teams battled to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter.

The Griffins dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers, 27-12, for a 15-point halftime lead.  Westminster shot 11-14 from the field and 5-6 from beyond the arc.

Gonzalez scored to open the third quarter and gave Westminster its largest lead of the game, 17-points.  The Mountaineers picked away at the Griffin's lead in the third quarter.  Westminster's shooting dropped a little in the third quarter and the Mountaineers picked away at the lead reducing their deficit to nine.

The home side hit a three to start the fourth quarter and brought the game within six points but that's the closes the Griffins let it get as they answered each basket with one of their own.  Western collected fouls early and Westminster benefited by going to the line 14 times and finished with a 13-point win.

"A great road win boy our group," Head Coach Shelley Jarrard said.  "Western is fast, big, physical and playing very well.  We had a little foul trouble but got through it."

Gonzalez led all shooters with 22 points and recorded seven assists.  Olivia Elliss and Kaitlin Toluono both scored in double figures with 14 points apiece.

Westminster out rebounded its opponents 41-27.  Toluono led the way with nine boards.  Gonzalez, Sicilee Williams and Hunter Krebs each got six and Elliss pulled down five.

The Griffins (14-2, 12-0 RMAC) and Mavericks (15-1, 12-0 RMAC) meet tomorrow night in a showdown of the RMAC's top two teams.
