Women's Win Streak Broken

Griffin's win streak ends at 13 with loss to #20 Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Griffins (14-3, 12-1 RMAC) 13 game win streak came to an end as the #20 Mavericks (16-1, 13-0 RMAC) won to extend theirs to 15.

The game was very close and decided at the end, as one could expect from two very good teams.  Neither team led by more than five points until the very end when the Griffins sent the Mavericks to the line to save time on the clock for chances to get back into the game.

Westminster didn't get its first basket until five minutes into the first quarter.  Olivia Elliss scored to get things started and the Griffins found themselves back in the game at the first media timout.  Out of the timeout Denise Gonzalez drained back-to-back threes and gave the Griffins their first lead of the game, 12-7.

The Mavericks scored three quick points to start the second quarter and regained the lead, but the Griffins only allowed that to stand for about one minute.  A 5-0 run put the visitors back in the lead which they held through the quarter into the halftime break leading, 26-23.

The third quarter tightened up quickly and the score was tied six times with two lead changes.  A trio of made free throws gave Westminster the lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The lead changed five times over six minutes in the fourth.  Colorado Mesa went on a 10-2 run for a seven-point lead with 37 seconds remaining.  The Griffins were unable to claw their way back in after that and fell, 57-49, to the Mavericks.

Turnovers hurt Westminster on the night.  They gave up 15 points on 20 turnovers.

Gonzalez led the Griffins with 15 points followed by Elliss with 11 and Kaylee Carlsen with 10.

Westminster grabbed 33 total rebounds.  Hunter Krebs pulled eight down, Elliss collected six and Gonzalez grabbed four.

The Griffins will face the Mavericks in a rematch at home in two weeks, after hosting Adams State and Fort Lewis next week.
