GUNNISON, Colo.—The men's basketball team (7-9, 5-7 RMAC) got its first conference road win against Western State, 77-72.
Westminster Shot 56.1 percent from the field on the night compared to the Mountainer's 32.4 percent. The game remained close due to the home side's 12 three-pointers, nine in the first half.
The Griffins led for most of the first half. They took the lead two minutes in on a
Jake Connor three, and held that lead for almost 16 minutes. Western got hot and closed the half making 3-4 from three and finished with a five-point lead over the Griffins.
The Griffins improved on their shooting from the first half and shot 63.3 percent from the field making 19-30.
Brandon Warr scored 20 second-half points after being held to just four in the first half. Warr gave the Griffins a five-point lead, with 45 seconds remaining, after being fouled on a layup.
On Western's next possession,
Jai Jai Ely stole the ball and was fouled. Making both free throws gave Westminster a seven-point lead, enough to secure the win on the road.
Warr led the team with 24 points. He went 10-14 from the field and 3-3 from the free-throw line.
Jacob McCord and Ely each scored double-figures with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Westminster out rebounded the Mountaineers 20 -28. McCord and Warr led the team with nine rebounds.
Warr and
James Walljasper each recorded a block for the Griffins and McCord recorded three steals.
Westminster travels to Grand Junction to play Colorado Mesa tomorrow night.
