Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-- Westminster College men's basketball (7-10, 5-8 RMAC) fell to Colorado Mesa (13-6, 8-5 RMAC) in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Griffins and Mavericks traded baskets to start tonight's game. The game remained closely contested during the opening 11 minutes with five lead changes and four ties.
After scoring the first basket of the game Westminster gave up a 8-0 run and trailed by six.
Jake Connor hit a three for the next basket and the Griffins made a 9-3 run to tie the game 11-11.
Westminster held the lead twice after that but for mere moments as the home side answered each lead with a basket to tie the game. The score was tied for the last time at 14 with 9:19 left in the first half.
The Griffins pushed back within four but a final surge by Mesa to end the half increased the deficit to 12. Westminster was unabale to fain the momentum to comeback in the second half.
The Griffins ended the night 38.9 percent from the field, 26.1 from three and 64.7 percent from the charity stripe. They grabbed 27 rebounds, recorded three blocked shots and four steals.
Brandon Warr, Joonas Tahvainen and Connor scored in double-figures and led the team with 11 points each.
Warr led the team with eight rebounds.
James Walljasper and
Jacob McCord were second on the team with four rebounds each.
The Griffins return to Behnken Field House for two weekends of home games. They host Adams State and Fort Lewis next week and then a rematch of this weekend the following weekend against Western State and Colorado Mesa.
