SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—The Westminster women's basketball team remained undefeated in the RMAC after defeating MSU Denver, 73-71.
Both teams got off to a slow start missing the opening eight shots in the game. The Griffins were 0-5 from the field before
Olivia Elliss scored inside the paint to get the Griffins on the scoreboard. The team scored 12 points in the final four minutes of the first quarter to tie the game, 14-14.
Denise Gonzalez and
Hunter Krebs combined for four three-pointers as the Griffins outscored the Roadrunners 22-8 in the second quarter.
Westminster recorded its largest lead, 17 points, in the third quarter. The Roadrunners outscored Westminster by seven points to swing the momentum their way.
The Roadrunners came within two and three points in the final four minutes. A couple of three pointers from
Sicilee Williams helped halt the visitors push to take the lead back. Westminster made 7-8 free throws, in the final two minutes, to hold on for the win.
Gonzalez, Elliss and Williams all scored double digit points. Gonzalez went 5-8 from beyond the arc to lead the team with 23 points. Elliss recorded a double-double scoring 20 and grabbing 12 rebounds. Williams scored 13 points going 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from three.
The Griffins were near perfect, 14-15, from the free throw line. Gonzalez was 2-3, Elliss and
Hunter Krebs made 4-4 and
Kaylee Carlsen and
Rian Rawlings went 2-2 from the stripe.
Westminster is on the road over the next two weekends. They play at Regis on Friday (1/18) and Colorado Christian on Saturday (1/19).
