SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--A dominating offensive and defensive performance earns Westminster an impressive win over CSU-Pueblo, 20-5. The Griffins improve to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in RMAC.
Nick Marcy assisted
Thomas Sarjeant for the opening goal of the game. CSU-Pueblo tied the game just three seconds later.
Chance Beutler scored to tie the game at 3-3. Pueblo took its second lead of the game after a Westmistner turnover led to a goal. The home side recovered the lead, 4-3, after goals from
Lane Kadish and Marcy. The final seven minutes of the first quarter finished scoreless after a goal from
Lane Kadish and
Nick Marcy recoverd the lead for the home side.
A strong Griffin defense held the Thunderwolves scoreless for thirty minutes, causing six turnovers, blocking two shots and six saves by goalkeeper
Conner McFarlane. During that time The Griffins increased their lead with an 11-1 run through the second quarter and seven minutes into the third. Westminster scored three more goals and finished the third quarter with a 10-point lead, 15-5.
The Griffins shut the opposition out and scored five more goals in the fourth quarter. They went 6-0 on face-offs and out shot Pueblo 15-4 for the win, 20-5.
Westminster out shot Pueblo 58-26 with 38 shots on goal. Goalkeepers
Sean Edwards and McFarlane combined for 12 saves. The Griffins won 19 of 10 face-offs and picked up 37 ground balls, four more than the opposition.
14 players recorded a point for Westminster. Sarjeant and Marcy led the offensive drive with five points. Sarjeant scored four goals and assisted one. Marcy scored three goals and assisted two.
Bridger Fisher and
Blake Gross each recorded three points. Fisher netted once and assisted two goals. Gross scored twice and assisted once.
Chance Beutler and
Ian Nadel took a majority of face-offs. Beutler won 9 of 12 and Nadel won five of seven.
Kolton Atkinson picked up five ground ball to lead the team and Beutler picked up three. Seven players recorded two ground balls and 15 recorded a single ground ball.
Will Dutton and
Grant Phillips each recorded two caused turnovers and seven others each recorded a single caused turnover.
McFarlane recorded nine saves over 40 minutes and Edwards recorded three saves over 20 minutes.
