LAS VEGAS, N.M.--Westinster men's basketball team (19-3, 15-3 RMAC) began an end-of-season, five-game, road trip with a win, 90-82, over New Mexico Highlands. Dayon Goodman, Sam Orchard, and Tanner Newbold combined for 67 points.
The first half was a back and forth battle with three ties and seven lead changes. The Griffins finished the half with a two-point lead.
Westminster went 4-13 from three, 48.3 percent from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe. New Mexico Highlands shot 40.7 percent from the field, making 5-11 from beyond the arc and 7-9 from the free throw line.
Westminster got out to an 11-point lead after starting the second half with a 17-6 run. Westminster held its largest lead, 23-points, with 8 minutes remaining.
The Cowboys made four 3-pointers during a 22-9 run, cutting Westminster's lead down to seven and putting pressure on visitors for the final minute of the game. In the final minute, Newbold and Jarred Laws made 7-8 free throws, keeping Westminster ahead of New Mexico Highlands, 90-82.
The Griffins finished the game shooting 54.7 percent from the field, making 9-18 from three-point range, and going 23-27 from the free throw line.
Goodman led the team in scoring with 31 points. He was perfect from the line on four attempts, made 3-6 from beyond the arc and 12-20 from the field. Goodman pulled down five rebounds and tallied three assists and one blocked shot.
Tanner Newbold scored 22 points, shooting 5-7 from the field, making 3-4 from three and 9-10 from the charity stripe. He added three assists and two rebounds.
Sam Orchard scored 14 points with three assists and a steal. Orchard was perfect from the free throw line, made one 3-pointer and was 5-8 from the field.
The Griffins next game is against CSU-Pueblo, scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and be available on live stats.
