PUEBLO, Colo.--
Dayon Goodman scored a career-high 43 points against CSU-Pueblo. Westminster defeated the Thunderwolves, 74-66, and remains on the heels of Fort Lewis (21-3, 17-2 RMAC) for the top spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings. The Griffins improve to 20-3 overall and 16-3 in the RMAC.
The Thunderwolves put the pressure on the Griffins from the start and the entire game. They started the night going 3-4 from three and jumping out to a quick lead.
Westminster fell behind by eight points but recovered and took their first lead of the game thirteen minutes in. The lead changed hands four times, over the next three minutes. The Griffins finished the half leading by two, 34-32.
Goodman dominated the half scoring 26 points, going 10-11 from the field, making 2-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-5 from the stripe.
The Thunderwolves scored and tied score at the beginning of the second half. Westminster regained the lead on the next possession. For the next fifteen minutes, the Griffins' lead teeter-tottered between six and one. With 3:56 remaining, Gavin Liggett scored his first points of the game for CSU-Pueblo, hitting two three pointers to give thema one-point lead.
Goodman made two free throws and regained the lead for Westminster. CSU-Pueblo turned the ball over on the next possession and
Sam Orchard fed Goodman for a layup and a three-point lead.
The home side scored to cut the lead down to one, then
Quincy Bair hit a jumper to go up by three again.
Sam Orchard stole the ball on the next possession, leading to a Goodman basket and five-point lead. The Griffins finished the half scoring three more points to finish, 74-66.
Westminster shot 56.5 percent from the field, making 3-11 from beyond the arc, and 19-23 from the stripe. The Thunderwolves were 44.4 from the field, 10-28 from three, and 8-10 from the line.
Dayon Goodman led all scorers with 43 points, setting a new career-high for the third time this season. He went 14-19 from the field, 2-5 from three and 13-14 from the free throw line.
Bair scored nine,
Mason Smith scored seven, and
Jarred Laws scored Six.
Scott Cook and
Tanner Newbold each had four points and
Sam Orchard had one.
Smith led the team in rebounding with five. Cook, Bair, Laws and Newbold each collected four rebounds and Orchard and Goodman pulled down three each.
