Men's basketball sweeps the competition on senior night

The Griffins honored seven seniors and defeated Colorado Mesa to complete the weekend sweep.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Westminster honored its seven seniors—Dayon Goodman, Sam Orchard, Quincy Bair, Scott Cook, Jarred Laws, and Masson Smith—and defeated Colorado Mesa, overcoming a seven-point deficit at halftime, to complete a sweep of its competition this weekend.  Westminster improved to 14-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action and 18-3 overall.
 
The score was tied, and the lead changed hands six time during the game.  Five of those ties and lead changes came during the first half.  Colorado Mesa held a seven-point lead, 39-32, going into halftime.  Westminster was perfect from the free throw line and fo.7 percent from the field  but only shot 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The Griffins wasted no time and started the second half with 25-6 time over 8 minutes.  The run began with a basket and then a dunk from Scott Cook and finished with a Dayon Goodman dunk.  Goodman scored 13 points during the run.  Westminster held a 12 point lead with only 12 minutes remaining.
 
The Mavericks recovered for a few minutes and reduced the lead to six points.  Westminster made a 20-7 point run with Goodman scoring nine, Sam Orchard with five, Quincy Bair with four and Tanner Newbold with 2.  At the end of the run the Griffins held a 19-point lead with only 2:11 remaining.
 
Griffins managed the final two minutes and earned the win, 83-70, completing a sweep of the Mavericks this season.
 
Westminster finished the night shooting 28-59 from the field, 7-17 from beyond the arc, and 20-21 from the free throw line.  Goodman, Mason Smith, Bair and Travis Devasharayee were each perfect from the charity stripe.
 
Goodman went off and scored 37 points, 26 second half points, and pulled down 16 rebounds.  He was 12-19 from the field, 2-4 from three, and perfect from the line on 11 attempts.
 
Newbold and Orchard each hit double digits.  Orchard put up 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.  Newbold scored 10 points and had two assists and two rebounds.  Quincy Bair had seven rebounds and nine points.
 
Westminster finishes the year with a five-game road trip, beginning with New Mexico Highlands on Thursday and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday.  Both games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and be available through live stats.
