Griffins fall to George Fox University

NEWBERG, Ore.—

Westminster women's lacrosse opened the 2018 season, on the road, against George Fox University in a non-conference game.

The Bruins (1-0) scored first, four minutes into the game, and followed up with three more over the next nine minutes.  Katie Adams got the Griffins on the scoreboard, and Brenlee Fordham followed up with a goal, less than one minute after.

The teams traded goals during the final six minutes of the half with Westminster's Audree Erekson scoring the last goal of the half with 42 seconds remaining.  The Bruins held a one-point lead, 6-5, at halftime.

The second half began with a flurry.  GF struck quickly, scoring in 13 seconds of the start of the half.  Westminster scored the next two goals and tied the game for the first time.  The Bruins scored two more goals to finish the first 10 minutes of the second half.

The Griffins and Bruins traded goals over the next 13 minutes before George Fox scored the final two goals for the 13-10 victory.

Westminster attempted 30 shots with 27 on target.  They had a 15-10 advantage in draw control but committed 33 turnovers to the 27 from the Bruins.

Adams scored three goals, and Daisy Mele netted twice to lead the Griffins.  Madison Ingman and Katie Hendershott each scored a goal and dished out an assist.  Phebe Walker, Erekson, and Fordham opened their accounts with a goal each.

Allison Lambert led the team with four draw controls, while Adams and Walker each had three.

Mele gathered eight ground balls for the Griffins, and Mikala Anderson gathered seven.

Westminster travels to Forest Grove, Ore., and plays Pacific University on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.  The game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Live video and live stats can be accessed through links on the women's lacrosse schedule.
