Griffins survive Grizzly attack

Westminster will play Fort Leiwis for the regular season championship on Saturday

ALAMOSA, Colo.—Westminster men's basketball defeated Adams State, 84-78, improving to 17-4 in the RMAC and 20-4 overall.  Westminster and Fort Lewis are tied for first in the standings and will play for the regular season championship at Fort Lewis on Saturday.  The game is scheduled for tip-off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the RMAC Network.  Live stats will also be available online.
 
The score was tied three times and the lead changed hands seven times during the first half.  With 8 minutes remaining, Dayon Goodman scored six and Orchard scored five as Westminster went on a 10-2 run, giving the Griffins a lead that would last until the end of the game.  The Griffins ended the first half with a six-point lead.
 
Westminster went 16-33 from the field, making 2-6 from beyond the arc, and making 7-11 from the charity stripe.  They pulled down 21 rebounds, blocked three shots, tallied one steal, and dished out seven assists.
 
Adams State was 12-31 from the field, making 4-10 from beyond the arc, and going 7-9 from the free throw line.  They collected 15 rebounds, 2 steals, and tallied five assists.
 
Scott Cook scored to get the Griffins started in the second half.  Westminster went on a 11-4 run and increased its lead to 13.  The Grizzlies outscored the Griffins 22-10, over the next six minutes, and reduced Westminster's lead to one with nine minutes remaining.
 
The game remained close, within two and three baskets, for the rest of the game.  Goodman scored 10 points and Quincy Bair, Sam Orchard and Tanner Newbold combined for 12, with eight coming from the charity stripe, to fend off the Grizzlies and finish six points ahead.
 
Goodman led the team in scoring and rebounding with 26 points and eight rebounds.  He went 12-22 from the field.
 
Bair scored 20 points, 10 in each half, shooting 7-13 from the field and making 4-5 from three point range.  He dished out three assists and tallied two steals.
 
Tanner Newbold and Sam Orchard each scored 11 points.  Orchard collected five rebounds and dished out five assists.  Orchard went 7-8 from the free throw line and Newbold was perfect on four attempts.
 
Westminster finished shooting 50.0 percent from the field, making 6-15 from beyond the arc and going 16-24 from the charity stripe.
