Women’s basketball defeated by conference leaders CSU Pueblo

Points off the bench and offensive rebounds prove the difference as Griffins are defeated, 78-67

PUEBLO, Colo.—Points off the bench and offensive rebounds prove the difference for CSU-Pueblo defeating Westminster, 78-67.  Westminster is 12-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and 13-10 overall.

Westminster's Denise Gonzalez opened tonight's scoring with two free throws.  The rest of the first quarter was a bit of a tug-of-war.  The score was tied and the lead changed hands four times.  The Thunderwolves stole the ball with six seconds remaining and drove down the court, but Hunter Krebs blocked the shot to preserve the Griffins' 21-20 lead.

The home side took the lead from Westminster to begin the second quarter.  The Thunderwolves missed a couple of shots but pulled down two offensive rebounds and made the third attempt, swinging the momentum in their favor.  The Griffins were outscored 18-3 over the next eight minutes.

Westminster scored five points and held the CSU-Pueblo to two points in the final two minutes of the quarter.  The went to the locker room Griffins trailing by 11 points, 41-30.

At halftime, Westminster shot 50.0 percent from the field, was 33.3 percent from three, and 75 percent from the free throw line.  CSU-Pueblo was 51.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three and 83.3 percent from the stripe.  The Thunderwolves out rebounded the Griffins offensively, 8-1, and took 11 more shots.

The third and fourth quarters each ended in a tie, 17-17 at the end of the third and 20-20 at the end of the fourth.  Westminster went 12-28 from the field, 6-13 from beyond the arc and 7-7 from the line, and CSU-Pueblo went 12-29 from the field, 3-11 from three and 10-14 from the stripe.

Westminster were out rebounded 41-24, and 17-4 offensively.  The Griffins were outscored 33-14 from the bench.

Krebs scored 23 points to lead all scorers, followed closely by Gonzalez with 21, ahead of the Thunderwolves' leading scorer Molly Rohrer, off the bench, with 20.

Haddi Williams pulled down six rebounds and Krebs and Sicilee Williams each grabbed five.

Westminster will play at Regis next Saturday, Feb. 17.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m..  The game will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and live stats will be available.
