GOLDEN, Colo.--A bitter end for the Westminster men's soccer team in its first RMAC tournament appearance, losing in overtime to Colorado Mesa.
The game is what you might expect from to very talented teams, a back and forth in possession, attack and defense.
Westminster had excellent possession in the first half and controlled the ball. Colorado Mesa played with a deep defensive line and looked to play more on the counter attack. The Griffins out shot the Mavericks 8-4 and had more corner kicks, 5-1.
Late in the half, Mesa won its single corner kick. Kevin Del Mazo served it in and Jame McGhee headed it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.Â
Amit Hefer got a shot on goal, with the little time remaining in the half, but the Mesa goalkeeper made a save to preserve the lead.
The Griffins continued to move the ball around the field looking for a gap or window to get through.Â
Gavin Flitton's shot in the 62nd minute was blocked out of bounds for a corner kick.Â
Amit Hefer's service was knocked down in front of goal and
Preston McIllece was quickest to react and shot it into the back of the goal.
Regulation ended tied, 1-1, as both teams each managed one shot in the remaining 30 minutes of play.
Mesa scored in the 94th minute for the win, 2-1.
"I'm gutted for the men," Head Coach
Josh Pittman responded after the game. "They capitalized on a couple of mistakes and we couldn't do enough to win."
"I'm proud of how he team played all year. We have a lot to build on."
