Men's basketball wins first game of the new year

Westminster cruised to a win over Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Westminster men's basketball team opened the new year with a win over Colorado Christian (3-11, 2-6 RMAC), 77-64.  Westminster improves to 10-2 overall and 6-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The game was tied 8-8, three minutes into the first half.  Westminster went on a 30-6 run, scoring five 3-pointers over 12 minutes and marking the Griffin's largest lead of the game, 24 points.  The half ended with Westminster leading, 44-21.
 
Dayon Goodman scored 16 points in the half.  Westminster was 18-of-30 from the field in the first half and made 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
 
The Cougars scored seven 3-pointers and outscored the Griffins, 43-33, during the second half. Westminster benefited from the large lead they had built in the first half and finished the game with a 13 point lead.
 
 The Griffins shot 43.5 percent from the field and only made 2-of-10 from three point range.  The Griffins were 11-of-20 from the Charity Stripe.
 
Three Griffins scored in double-digits.  Goodman led the team in scoring, with 24 points, and in rebounds, collecting nine.  Tanner Newbold was perfect from beyond the arc 5-6 from the field, scoring 13 points.  Sam Orchard scored 12 points and was perfect from the charity stripe.
 
Mason Smith pulled down five rebounds and Jarred Laws and Sam Orchard each collected four rebounds.
 
The Griffins will play No. 12 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on the RMAC Network.  Live stats will also be available online.
