Men's basketball upset No. 12 Colorado School of Mines

Griffins outscore the Orediggers by five, in the second half, to win, 78-73

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Westminster men's basketball team scored 78 points, defeating and upsetting  the No. 12 Colorado School of Mines.  The Griffins improve to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The Griffins shot 50.9 percent from the field in the first half, making 14 shots of 23. Dayon Goodman scored 19, 10 more than the highest scorer for the Orediggers.  The team was perfect from the free throw line as Sam Orchard made three and Goodman made five.  The teams entered half time tied, 39-39.
 
The home team scored the opening basket of the second half to take the lead.  Scott Cook scored the next basket of the game and Mason Smith followed up with two free throws to regain the lead for Westminster.  Zach Rusk of Colorado School of Mines scored next and tied the game for the final time before Orchard scored and set the Griffins on a 12-4 run, recapturing the lead.  Westminster saw the game out to the end and finished with the win, 78-73.
 
Westminster held its largest lead of 11 points, with 7:29 remaining in the second half.  Goodman scored 15 more points and remained perfect from the line with two attempts.  The Griffins were 48.1 percent from the field and made 3-of-5 3-pointers and 10-of-14 free throws. 
 
Westminster finished the game shooting 54.0 percent from the field, making 6 3-pointers.  The Griffins were 81.8 percent from the charity stripe, making 18-of-22.  The home side shot 43.4 percent from the field, made 11 3-pointers, and shot 72.7 percent from the free throw line.
 
Goodman and Orchard each scored double digit points.  Goodman led both teams with 34 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Orchard scored 14 points and had five assists.
 
Westminster returns to Behnken Fieldhouse next week for games against Regis on Friday and Chadron State on Saturday.  Both games are scheduled for tip-off at 7:30 p.m.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and available through live stats.  Tickets are available to purchase online, in advance, or at the door prior to the game.
