SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's basketball team got off to a slow start against Chadron State (3-14, 1-10 RMAC). Westminster prevailed in the end, defeating the Eagles 69-51, improving to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The eagles began the game scoring seven unanswered points in the opening four minutes. The Griffins were 25.0 percent from the field when they scored their first basket of the game.
The away side were leading by 10, halfway through the first half, 19-9. Travis Devasharayee drove a Westminster rally to end the half, draining three 3-pointers and a jumper, with baskets from
Quincy Bair,
Jarred Laws,
Sam Orchard and
Tanner Newbold. The half ended, 31-31.
Westminster scored to begin the second half and took control of the game for the remainder of the night. With 11 minutes remaining, the Griffins went on a 12-2 run, taking a double-digit lead for the first time. The Griffins finished the game, outscoring the Eagles 15-9, posting the final score, 69-51.
Westminster shot 47.2 percent from the field, making 6-16 from three-point range, and 76.5 percent from the free throw line. The away side shot 37.5 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from beyond the arc line and 58.8 percent from the line.
The Westminster bench outscored the opposition bench, 28-18. Travis Devasharayee came off the bench and scored 18 points, shooting 70 percent from the field and going 4-6 from three-point range, to lead the team.
Quincy Bair earned a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. He added three assists, one steal and one blacked shot to his tally.
Sam Orchard contributed 13 points, scoring double-digit on back-to-back nights.
The Griffins travel to South Dakota for games on Thursday and Saturday. The Griffins play Black Hills State on Thursday and South Dakota Mines & Technology on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and will be available to follow though live stats.
