Women’s Basketball Notebook: Fort Lewis & Adams State

Griffins Home for Final Two Games of the Season
The Westminster women's basketball team wraps up the 2016-17 season this weekend with a pair of home games in the Behnken Field House. The Griffins host Fort Lewis on Friday before facing Adams State on Saturday. Both games will tip at 5:30 p.m.
 
The team will honor its five seniors in a brief ceremony after the game on Saturday. Tickets for both games are available online by visiting WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
 
The games will also be broadcast live on the RMAC Network with Mike Lageschulte calling the action. RMAC Network is available online at RMACsports.tv and the video is optimized for viewing on portable devices. Live stats will also be available during the games. About the Griffins
Westminster heads into the final weekend of the season at 10-14 overall and winners in three of their past five games. The Griffins are 8-12 in RMAC action and sit 11th in the conference standings. Though not eligible for the RMAC Tournament, the Griffins are one-game out of a top-8 finish. They have gone 5-5 at home during the season.
 
The Griffins are averaging 60.4 points per game while shooting 38.9 percent from the field. They have scored above 60 points in a game just once in the last 10 outings. The team makes 6.9 threes per game and shoots 31.8 percent from beyond the arc. They are fourth in the RMAC by making 73.8 percent at the foul line.
 
Sydnee Taylor enters the season's final weekend leading the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game to rank 20th in the RMAC. Aubrie Vale added 10.1 points per game with a team-best 40 made 3-pointers. Denise Gonzalez scores 8.4 points per game while Sicilee Williams gets 7.1 per game.
 
Westminster is holding the opposition to 64.8 points per game and 39.6 percent shooting. They secure 35.4 rebounds per game and allow opponents to grab 37.7 rebounds per game. The Griffins distribute 11.4 assists per game and tally 6.4 steals per game.
 
Vale leads the team with 149 rebounds and Lancee Whetman has grabbed 101 boards. Vale also leads the Griffins with 67 assists and she is tied with Gonzalez for the team lead in steals at 37. Taylor leads all Griffins with seven blocked shots.
 
Road Warriors
The Griffins started this five-game homestand after playing of 11 of 15 games away from home. They traveled over 9,300 land miles during the year to play 16 games away from home including exhibition and neutral site games. The team is 5-9 in all countable games away from home this season.
 
Solid First Year
Sydnee Taylor currently leads the Griffins in scoring at 11.7 points per game and she has scored in double figures 14 times. Taylor has led the Griffins in scoring during six games this season with three 20-point performances. She is shooting 41.0 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from beyond the arc with 31 makes. Taylor is third on the team with 93 rebounds while adding 39 assists and 20 steals.
 
Vale's Value
Aubrie Vale is second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game and she has scored in double figures 13 times. She has tallied two 20-point outing and been the team's leading scorer in six games. Vale leads the Griffins with 149 rebounds and 67 assists while adding 37 steals. She has four double-doubles this season and shoots 35.8 percent from the floor and 31.7 percent from three. Earlier this season, Vale became the 27th player in school history to reach 500 career points as a Griffin. She had a season-high 27 points with seven 3-pointers – one shy of the school record – in the Griffins upset of CSU-Pueblo.
 
Take the Rock
Denise Gonzalez is scoring 8.4 points per game to rank third on the team. She has eight games with a double-digit scoring total and she has led the team in scoring in four games. Gonzalez is tied with Vale for the team lead in steals with 37 and she has at least one steal in all but four games this season with multiple steals in a game 12 times. She currently ranks 23rd in team history with 77 steals and is seventh by averaging 1.54 steals per game in two seasons with the program.
 
Williams Rolling
Sicilee Williams has been a steady performer for the Griffins all season and enters the weekend averaging 7.1 points per game. Williams scored in double figures in three of the past five games and six times overall this season. She is shooting 33.8 percent from beyond the arc and has a made 3-pointer in nine of the last 10 games. Williams shoots 85.4 percent at the foul line and has recorded 24 assists and 15 steals.
 
Opponent Info: Fort Lewis
• Fort Lewis comes to SLC at 20-6 overall and winners of four straight.
• The Skyhawks are 15-6 in RMAC play and are fourth in the standings.
• Briana Clah leads the team by scoring 14.0 points per game.
• FLC leads the all-time series 4-2 and they have won four straight.
• They picked up a 78-66 win on December 17 in Durango.
 
Opponent Info: Adams State
• Adams State will enter Saturday's finale at 2-22 overall and 2-9 on the road.
• The Grizzlies are 1-20 in RMAC play and rank 15th in the standings.
• Cydney McHenry scored 10.2 points per game to lead the team.
• Westminster has a 3-1 lead in the all-time series and have won three straight.
• The Griffins won 84-75 in Alamosa on December 16.

RMAC Tournament
The 2017 RMAC Tournament will begin on February 28 with quarterfinal games at the home site of the top-4 teams in the final conference standings. The highest remaining seed will then host the semifinals and championship rounds on March 3 and 4 respectively. All of the games can be seen live on the RMAC Network at RMACsports.tv.
