Girffins fall to Thunderwolves

Women's basketball loses to CSU-Pueblo, 63-53, in home opener

SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster women's basketball team lost its conference home opener to CS-Pueblo, 63-53.  The Thunderwolves are undefeated, 4-0, in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
Colorado scored 17 points in the first and second quarters to lead at halftime, 34-25.  The game was tied, 7-7, with 5:29 left in the first quarter.  The Griffins only scored four points the rest of the quarter and the Thunderwolves scored 10 to build a seven-point lead.
 
The teams traded baskets in the second quarter.  The Griffins were the only team able to score consecutive baskets in the second quarter, scoring two consecutive baskets one time.  Pueblo increased their lead by two points from the first quarter.
 
The Griffins won the third quarter, 15-12.  Hunter Krebs acounted for seven points, Denise Gonzalez had four, Kaylee Carlsen hit a three, and Sydnee Taylor scored a free throw.
 
With 26 seconds remaining, Pueblo held its largest lead of 13 points for the second time in the fourth quarter.  Sydnee Taylor scored the final points of the game, a layup and two free throws, reducing the Pueblo lead to 10 and a final score of 63-53.
 
Westminster finished the game shooting 35.2 percent from the field, 18.8 percent from the three point arc and 75 percent from 16 attempts at the free throw line. The Thunderwolves shot 44.2 percent, 30.8 percent and 81.3 percent.
 
Gonzalez led the Griffins with 21 points, five assists and four steals.  Taylor scored 10 points and had five rebounds.  Hunter Krebs scored nine points and lead the team with seven rebounds.
 
The Griffins return to Behnken Fieldhouse tomorrow night for a conference game against New Mexico Highlands.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are available for purchase online or at the door prior to the game.  Live stats of the game will be available online.
