SALT LAKE CITY –
Kaylee Carlsen scored 16 points and lead three other players in double digit figures as the Griffins earned their first home win of the 2017-18 season, beating New Mexico Highlands, 77-44.
A very good first half got the Griffins off to a good start.
Sicilee Williams scored the first points of the game and initiated a seven point run for Westminster. New Mexico responded by scoring the next five points only to see the home side make a 21-to-2 run to increase their lead. At the end of the first quarter the Griffins led by 16 points.
Both teams combined for 21 missed shots during the second quarter and finished the first half with a score of, 40-21.
The Griffins outscored New Mexico 22-9 in the third quarter and 15-14 in the fourth quarter.
Denise Gonzalez and Carlsen each scored double figures in the second half to lead the team to a 77-44 win over the Cowgirls.
Four Griffins scored in double figures. Carlsen was the leading scorer with 16 points, followed closely by Gonzalez with 15.
Hunter Krebs and
Sicilee Williams each had 10 points and
Sydnee Taylor came close to double figures, scoring nine points.
Krebs pulled down four defensive and four offensive boards to lead the Griffins. Gonzalez and Taylor each had six rebounds.
Westminster will play two more games at home next Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. against Fort Lewis, and Saturday's game is scheduled for the same time against Adams State.
