GUNNISON, Colo. -- The Westminster women's basketball team bounced back from its loss, to Colorado Mesa on Thursday, beating Western State by 20-points. The Griffins controlled the game against the Mountaineers, leading for 37 minutes. Westminster is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Each of the starters scored at the beginning of the game as the Griffins went on a 20-to-6 run, building a lead that would last for the rest of the game. The lead teeter-tottered between five and 10 until the end of the first half, settling on 9 with Westminster leading 39-30.
Denise Gonzalez scored the first six points of the second half, putting the Griffins strongly in control with a double-digit lead. Westminster continued to dominate, shooting 51.9 percent from the field, and gradually increasing its lead over the Mountaineers, finishing the game with a 70-50 win.
Westminster out shot Western State from the field, 54.4 percent to 37.3 percent. Four Griffins scored in double digits. Gonzalez scored 15 points to lead the team,
Sydnee Taylor and
Sicilee Williams each scored 12 points and
Kaylee Carlsen scored 11 points.
Hunter Krebs scored eight,
Max Shelley had seven,
Haddi Williams scored three and
Hillary Weixler had two.
Westminster pulled down 35 rebounds, 25 defensive and 10 offensive rebounds. Krebs collected seven rebounds to lead the team and Shelley collected six and Gonzalez had had five rebounds.
The women's basketball team has played eight games on the road to start the season. Next week will be its first home game of the season against CSU-Pueblo on Friday and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.
