GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Men's basketball wins conference opener at Colorado Mesa (5-1, 1-1 RMAC). Westminster beat Mesa, 74-62, to remain undefeated and improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC.
The first half was a close affair with the Griffins leading at half-time, 36-33.
Tanner Newbold led the bench with eight points to outscore the opposition's bench 11 to 4. The Griffins shot 50.0 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the 3-point arc. The Mavericks were 42.3 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from the arc and made it to the charity stripe nine times, scoring seven.
Mesa came within two points of Westminster three times during the first five minutes of the second half. Westminster responded with an 11-3 run and were able to keep Mesa at least seven points down the rest of the game.
The Mavericks went 0-of-9 for three and shot 33.3 percent from the field. The Griffins shot 42.3 percent from the field and 3-of-9 for three.
Dayon Goodman had a double-double with 12 rebounds and 30 points. This is the fourth game out of five that Goodman has scored at least 30 points. Goodman has been perfect from the free throw line in the last four games, totaling 42-44 on the season.
Quincy Bair scored 12 points, collected seven rebounds and had three blocks and a steal. Jared Laws scored 13 points and contributed two steals and a block. Newbold scored hit three 3-pointers on his way to 11 points.
Mason Smith and
Eris Winder each had three points and
Sam Orchard scored two.
Westminster plays Western State (3-4, 0-1 RMAC) on Saturday. The game is scheduled for tip-off at 7 p.m. The game will be available on
